Genshin Impact has been receiving a lot of new content recently, including several new characters with each patch. Since Inazuma’s launch alone, six new characters have been added to the game. So it feels a little strange that the 2.2 livestream held on Sunday only revealed one new character: Thoma. Going off of past updates, it is highly possible that new characters for the 2.2 update have yet to be revealed.
After so many new characters, it may simply be time for a break, but there is a precedent for this. Before the 1.3 update, the livestream only announced Xiao as a new character, but then Hu Tao was a surprise release later on in Version 1.3. And while the 1.6 patch for Genshin Impact only had one new character, Kazuha, the majority of updates have added at least two characters. So it is highly likely that another character will be dropped during Version 2.2.
The characters that have been released since the 2.0 update have been from Inazuma, which makes sense as Genshin Impact’s story is currently focused on the region. That probably means that if another character is announced for 2.2, they will most likely also be from Inazuma. There are two characters already in the game that would be perfect for such a surprise announcement: Yae Miko and Gorou. Yae Miko played a big role in the 2.1 portions of the Inazuma Archon Quest. Quite a few leakers were expecting Miko to be added to the game after Kokomi’s Banner in Genshin Impact, so it wouldn’t be surprising for her to become playable soon. Gorou would also make sense as a surprise drop, especially because the 5-star characters have already been announced, and he is rumored by Twitter user UBatcha to be a 4-star character. Although, it should be recognized that UBatcha believes Gorou will be coming in 2.3.
Genshin Impact: Will 2.2 Have Another New Character?
While 2.0 and 2.1 have focused almost entirely on Inazuma, 2.2 will be bringing Liyue characters to the region, specifically Tartaglia and Xinyan. This could open up the opportunity for new Liyue characters. Yaoyao and Yunjin both have in-game art, and Yunjin was even briefly shown in the Moonlight Merriment event. Because Liyue characters are slowly being added back into the story, it is possible that new characters from the region will start to make an appearance, too.
While there are other Inazuma characters that are rumored to be playable soon, they have yet to be shown in-game and are, therefore, unlikely to be coming in Genshin Impact 2.2. The two characters in question are Kamisato Ayato and Arataki Itto. The only information currently available about these two characters either comes from brief mentions in the game or through alleged leaks. Considering neither of them even have official art, it seems unlikely that they would be a surprise drop, especially since leakers are actively looking for information about them. That leaves the most likely characters to be a surprise drop for the Genshin Impact 2.2 update to be either Yae Miko or Gorou.
