Genshin Impact 2.6: Why Dainsleif Returns In The New Archon Quest

Genshin Impact’s Version 2.6 update brings the new region of The Chasm along with the new playable character, 5-star Hydro sword-user Kamisato Ayato. With this new region, a familiar face rejoins the main storyline as players delve into the Underground Mines of The Chasm in Genshin Impact. Version 2.6’s Archon Quest unravels mysteries surrounding the future playable character, Dainsleif.

[Warning: This article contains spoilers for Genshin Impact’s main story.]

Dainsleif first appeared in the World Quest “Bough Keeper: Dainsleif” which led into the Archon Quest – Chapter I, Act IV: “We Will Be Reunited.” In this quest, the Traveler discovers their sibling is working with the Abyss Order and has no plans to return until the Traveler discovers the truth of Teyvat. Dainsleif is revealed to be the Twilight Sword – a royal guard from Khaenri’ah who failed to protect his people and was forced to witness as the land was cursed and his people were turned into monsters. Having disappeared in the Abyss Herald’s portal since, Dainsleif reappears in the Underground Mines of The Chasm.

“Requiem of the Echoing Depths” is Chapter II, Act IV of the Archon Quests. In order to begin this Archon Quest, players must first complete Chapter II, Act III: “Omnipresence Over Mortals” – which revolves around Genshin Impact’s Raiden Shogun – and must be Adventure Rank 30 or higher. Additionally, players must complete “The Heavenly Stone’s Debris” which is the fourth part of The Chasm’s main questline, “The Chasm Delvers.”

Genshin Impact 2.6 Archon Quest: Dainsleif Speaks of the Destruction of Khaenri’ah

“Requiem of the Echoing Depths” begins with a Commission from Katheryne of the Adventurer’s Guild in Liyue, who tasks the Traveler with investigating claims from the NPC Yuehui. On the surface of The Chasm, Yuehui recounts his men witnessing Hilichurls walk into The Chasm, as if in a trance, and that they never resurface. Suspecting the Abyss Order’s involvement, the Traveler delves into the Underground Mines.

In the Nameless Ruins, the Traveler discovers structures similar to the Defiled Statue – the upside-down Statue of the Seven devoted to Barbatos or Genshin Impact’s Venti – and suddenly runs into Dainsleif. Dainsleif explains that he had resurfaced in Stormterror’s Lair after entering the Abyss Herald’s portal and has been following trails since. At the Traveler’s insistence, Dainsleif reveals more information about his past and identity as the Twilight Sword and the curse of immortality bestowed upon the people of Khaenri’ah. Wary of the Abyss Order’s listening ears, they investigate a lit brazier nearby.

At the brazier, it is revealed that the Hilichurls have been entering the Underground Mines as the environment weakens the effect of their curse. Suffering from the same curse, Dainsleif expresses that even he feels the slight relief beckoning him to stay. He states that Hilichurls wear masks in order to avoid the despair upon witnessing their reflection in the water. When the Hilichurls feel their end approaching, they seek the calm and reprieve of the underground to accompany them as they erode into nonexistence.

Genshin Impact’s Orbs of Blue Depths are found by defeating the Black Serpent Knights. As the group is attacked by these knights, it is revealed that they were part of the Royal Guard of Khaenri’ah. Dainsleif explains that they have been engulfed completely by the curse, though his curiosity is piqued as he spies a Black Serpent Knight watching them. This knight is suspected to be someone named Halfdan, who was part of the Elite Guard under Dainsleif’s command. During the fall of Khaenri’ah, Dainsleif had ordered the Black Serpent Knights to protect the people of Khaenri’ah and he infers that even now, they still attempt to fulfill those final orders.

Genshin Impact 2.6 Reunites The Traveler & Their Sibling In A Flashback

Past the Dark Mud in Genshin Impact, Halfdan urges the group to follow him up the summit to a water structure which seems to be the source of the alleviating sensation. Farther down Halfdan’s route, the group enters a Hilichurl settlement where they find an Inteyvat – a flower unique to Khaenri’ah that symbolizes a wanderer far from home. The Traveler enters a flashback in which their sibling discusses their plan to use the device in an attempt to cleanse the curse and return those affected into a natural cycle of life and death despite its low success rate. If this attempt succeeds, it could be the key to reviving the nation of Khaenri’ah.

Dainsleif considers the attempt futile, as the curse is something that he believes cannot be undone. He also believes this act would dishonor the final wishes of his old comrades. After some discussion, the Traveler believes Dainsleif and his goal to stop the Abyss Order, since no one should have the right to decide the fate of another’s life. Genshin Impact’s Abyss Herald disrupts their path to destroy the device, intent to protect the plan of the Traveler’s sibling. The group quickly defeats the Herald, and at Dainsleif’s urgency, they quickly return to the summit.

Genshin Impact 2.6 Archon Quest: The Abyss Order’s Plot To Revive Khaenri’ah

At the summit, an Abyss Lector is already in the process of starting the ritual. All around them, the monsters begin to thrash in pain from the device. Dainsleif, also overrun with pain, directs the Traveler to find a way to stop the device. Suddenly, Halfdan appears and runs toward the device, using his body to block the harmful rays of the device and temporarily disable it. The Abyss Lector is defeated, and the Traveler sets off to destroy the small devices powering the larger one.

Unlike other puzzles that require the Lumenstone Adjuvant gadget in Genshin Impact, the devices are dismantled quickly by force, and the Abyss Order’s plan is halted. In the summit, they confirm Halfdan to be dead, but his soul appears as Dainsleif begins to walk away. The pair reconcile and salute each other, with Dainsleif offering respect at the 500-year-long upholding of his past orders. Halfdan remarks that, since Dainsleif still lives, Khaenri’ah lives on with him. With that, Halfdan fades away with a content smile.

In the aftermath, Dainsleif reminds the Traveler that the Abyss Order’s plans are far from over. He hopes that when the time comes, the Traveler will have chosen a side to stand by. As the device has taken a toll on his health, Dainsleif leaves to recuperate. The events of this Commission prove to be far more complicated than the Traveler had hoped, though the Commissioner\’s mystery has been solved. As long as the Abyss Order remains active, Genshin Impact’s main story is far from complete.
