Genshin Impact: How Kamisato Ayato Compares To Other Hydro Users

Genshin Impact\’s newest character, Kamisato Ayato, will be released on March 30 along with the game\’s patch 2.6 update. He, alongside Venti, will be the first banner of 2.6 and is a greatly anticipated one. Ayato has been teased and hinted at by HoYoverse throughout different parts of Genshin Impact since the release of Inazuma, and now fans will soon be able to pull for him if they so desire.

In Genshin Impact, Kamisato Ayato is the older brother of another popular character, Kamisato Ayaka, and is the head of the Kamisato Clan of Inazuma. The game describes him as kind yet secretive, making him one of Genshin Impact\’s more mysterious characters. Ayato is a Hydro sword user that will be able to fill many roles in the game, like main DPS, sub-DPS, or support based on the user\’s playstyle. His flexibility sets him apart from a lot of other Hydro users.

As of Version 2.5, Hydro is the most underrepresented element at 5 playable characters (when Ayato releases, Hydro will move to be tied with Anemo at 6). Based on the roles of the Hydro characters currently in Genshin Impact, HoYoverse\’s vision for Hydro appears to be mostly a supportive element, with healers and supports making up half of Hydro\’s roster with Barbara, Xingqiu, and Sangonomiya Kokomi. Mona is a sub-DPS character due to the damage from her Elemental Burst, and Tartaglia is Hydro\’s only on-field main DPS, but it seems Ayato might be joining him in that role.

How Genshin Impact\’s Current Hydro Characters Work

Barbara is likely the first Hydro character most players received since she is given for free to anyone that reaches Adventure Rank 18 and completes the respective quest unless they got lucky and pulled a different one first. She has a simple kit – her Elemental Skill heals anyone that Normal Attacks with it active – and her Elemental Burst gives the player\’s entire party a large amount of healing instantly. While she is often overlooked by the player base, Barbara fills her role successfully in Genshin Impact and is a great choice for anyone that needs a healer.

Xingqiu is one of Genshin Impact\’s most popular supports, and for good reason. He provides damage reduction, healing, and great damage all in one kit – and a lot of team compositions include him for his utility. His elemental skill deals damage and provides a damage reduction ward to the player, and his Elemental Burst provides a buff to the player that will send out damaging Hydro swords to the enemy that a player is hitting with normal attacks. Xingqiu is great for a lot of Vaporize, Freeze, and Electro-charged team compositions.

Genshin Impact\’s first 5-star Hydro character was Mona. Mona\’s kit provides utility and great damage to any team composition and is useful in a lot of situations. Her Elemental Skill is a taunt that deals damage and applies Hydro, and her Elemental Burst will briefly crowd control enemies and apply them with a bubble that will deal massive damage when triggered by an attack. Mona is best suited as a sub-DPS due to the massive damage numbers that can be achieved with her burst, but can also be used as a support Hydro applier, especially if given the 3-star weapon, Thrilling Tales of Dragon Slayers.

Tartaglia is Genshin Impact\’s second 5-star Hydro character, and somewhat broke the trend of what HoYoverse was doing with its Hydro units. Tartaglia is a bow user but can activate his Elemental Skill to unleash quick Hydro melee attacks on enemies. His Elemental Burst does a massive amount of damage to the enemies in front of him. Tartaglia is great for reaction compositions since he can apply Hydro to enemies so quickly, and was the first Hydro character released in Genshin Impact that utilizes a main DPS build.

Sangonomiya Kokomi is the latest Hydro character released and has somewhat of a niche role. While she fully fits the role of an amazing healer and Hydro applier, she can also fit the role of an on-field DPS during the ten-second window of her elemental burst, since it greatly increases the damage caused by her normal attacks, and makes them heal the entire party, too. Yet since her damage does not reach the heights of other main DPS characters, Kokomi sits comfortably in the support/healer role, along with the majority of Hydro characters.

How Kamisato Ayato Differs From Other Hydro Characters In Genshin Impact

Genshin Impact fans are very excited for Ayato and were thrilled with his Banner reveal. The main thing that stands out for Ayato is the flexibility in his kit. A player is going to be able to utilize him in whatever way will benefit their team the most, either as an on-field damage dealer or off-field support. Since Ayato has no healing in his kit, it already sets him apart from half the Hydro cast in Genshin Impact. His Elemental Skill ability, Kamisato Art: Kyouka, bears a striking resemblance to Tartaglia\’s Elemental Skill. They both infuse the user\’s normal attacks with Hydro and make the user able to attack very quickly.

Ayato also has Constellations that will help greatly boost his damage during his elemental skill. A large difference with Ayato\’s skill, however, is that Ayato can only use normal attacks in the state given by his Elemental Skill, and cannot use charged or plunged attacks. Also, attacking in this state gives Ayato a stacking buff that continuously increases the damage done by his attacks in this state and this damage scales with Ayato\’s max HP. Even though Ayato\’s Elemental Skill is similar to another Hydro character\’s (namely Tartaglia), his Elemental Burst, Kamisato Art: Suiyuu, is a type of ability not to be compared with other Hydro users.

When used, it creates a large field on the ground that will continuously rain down Hydro swords onto enemies, dealing damage and applying Hydro. While this is good enough on its own and can be used to help trigger elemental reactions such as vaporize and freeze with other characters, similar to Xingqiu\’s burst, Ayato\’s Elemental Burst has another addition to it. Any character within the zone gains a percentage damage boost to normal attacks, which is a considerable buff and has great synergy with a good amount of characters, like Yoimiya and other Pyro attackers. However, since this buff will also apply to Ayato himself, it enables Ayato to adapt to any role that he is needed for. He can utilize his burst to support the rest of his team or himself, meaning that Ayato can function as either an on-field damage dealer or off-field support.

While some of Ayato\’s kit borrows similar aspects from other Hydro characters, he is wholly unique in his flexibility. The element of a character is extremely important due to the Elemental Reaction mechanics in the game. Hydro is one of the most valuable elements in the game since it is needed for some of the strongest Elemental Reactions in Genshin Impact: Vaporize and Freeze, and since Ayato is so flexible, he can enable these types of compositions for players that might not have other Hydro characters.

Ayato shows promise for Hydro\’s future in that it might not be stuck in the supportive role. Since he will be joining Xingqiu as a Hydro sword user, there are still no Hydro claymore or polearm users in Genshin Impact, and likely will not be in the near future. The variety in Ayato\’s kit gives hope that the Hydro characters of the future will be just as unique as he is.
