Every Genshin Impact player gets Kaeya for free at the start of the game, making him a great character to build early. Despite being a starter 4-Star unit, Kaeya’s popularity has increased over time as players begin to capitalize on his great potential as either a Support or DPS unit.
Kaeya is a 4-Star Cryo Sword user who holds the title of Cavalry Captain of Mondstadt. He is gifted to players for free during the first Archon quest of the game, meaning any players looking for a new unit to invest in can try Kaeya out if they haven’t already. Kaeya’s kit allows him to function well as either off-field support with his low cool-down Elemental Burst, or as a burst Sub-DPS with his abilities and auto-attacks. Thus, he can be built accordingly depending on what players need in their party more. Here are the weapons, artifacts, talents, and team compositions that work best for him.
While Kaeya’s accessibility has caused players to overlook him, Kaeya’s strength and flexibility makes him a great character that doesn’t require a lot of investment to be feasible. Thus, any players who need another character to help out in the Spiral Abyss, or who just have an interest in Kaeya, should definitely consider building him.
How to Build Kaeya in Genshin Impact
Here are all of Kaeya’s abilities, and how they work:
Normal Attack: Ceremonial Bladework – Kaeya performs up to five consecutive strikes.Elemental Skill: Frostgnaw – Kaeya unleashes a frigid blast, dealing Cryo DMG to enemies in front of him.Elemental Burst: Glacial Waltz – Kaeya summons three icicles that revolve rapidly around him for a period of time, dealing Cryo DMG to enemies it encounters.
For players building Kaeya as a support, they’ll want to level up his Elemental Burst as much as possible first, followed by his Elemental Skill. As a Sub-DPS unit, players will want to level up his Normal Attack, then his Burst, followed by his Elemental Skill.
Kaeya’s best artifact set will also depend on what role he’s going to play. If Kaeya is a Sub-DPS unit, players will likely want to use a four-piece Blizzard Strayer set, which grants a 15% Cryo DMG bonus as well as a 20% Crit Rate increase when an enemy is affected by Cryo, and a 40% Crit Rate increase when an enemy is frozen. If he is a support unit, players will want to go for a four-piece Noblesse Oblige set for the Elemental Burst DMG and overall ATK DMG boost, or a two-piece Noblesse Oblige and two-piece Blizzard Strayer set.
For Kaeya\’s artifact main stats, players are going to want to use an Energy Recharge or Elemental Mastery Hourglass. Energy Recharge is most important for him as a support unit to ensure his Burst is always available, while Elemental Mastery is feasible for him as a Sub-DPS unit. They should also use a Cryo DMG Bonus Cup, and a Crit Rate or Crit DMG hat. For sub-stats, players are going to want to focus most on Energy Recharge, along with Elemental Mastery. As a Sub-DPS, ATK% is also very important.
For both builds, Kaeya’s best-in-slot sword is the Skyward Blade, which has an Energy Recharge sub-stat and grants a Crit Rate boost as well as an ATK Speed and Normal and Charged Attack DMG boost. As a Support, players can replace this with the Favonius Sword, which provides a similar Recharge and Crit boost. To make him a viable Genshin Impact DPS unit, players can instead replace this with the Festering Desire, which provides an Elemental Recharge, Elemental Skill DMG, and Crit Rate boost.
For team compositions, Kaeya works best in a Freeze comp. This means players will want to have the Main DPS or other Sub-DPS of the team a Hydro character, as this will allow players to keep enemies frozen for long periods of time through Kaeya’s Burst. For a Hydro Main DPS, a well-built Tartaglia is a great choice. For another support, Xingqiu’s Burst synergizes well with Kaeya’s to Freeze enemies. Team compositions with Kaeya should also include an Electro character like Razor to apply Superconduct.
