What do you think of the Snapdragon 888 heating issue?

At chip level, I guess this is pretty bad. Why? Because most phones come with some cooling solution nowadays. Be it elaborate Vapour chamber, or just simply graphite layer.

At phone level, different OEMs are adopting different measures so the performance is varying. 1+9Pro is getting hot in camera[1] while Mi11 faced general heating issue.[2]

What’s surprising is, it’s happening despite presence of these cooling mechanisms. If they lacked these, then how severe the situation would’ve been, I can only imagine.

When A14 was giving unstable frames in Genshin Impact on iOS 14, the android camp was very quick to herald the end of “Apple chips fastest”. Where are we now? A14 equipped iPhone, without cooling, are now much better, thanks to an important fix shipped in iOS 14.2.[3]

I think, for the most part, it can be fixed on SD888 in similar manner — by OS update, but that doesn’t change the fact that it’s happening despite such elaborate measures to cool it.

Either this has to do with Samsung’s 5nm EUV process node[4] (which was reportedly having lots of problems last year) or Qualcomm is leaving X1 too liberal at power usage.
