This issue revolves around Chinese K-Pop idols and just Chinese people in general: sinophobia.
When the pandemic started, many people came to K-Pop idols’ defense against racist remarks made by others, which is great and all, but the one thing that didn’t sit right with me was when people defend idols by saying, “They’re not Chinese, they’re Korean!”
You are basically saying that because the idols are Korean, they shouldn’t be discriminated against, but if they were to be Chinese, it’s 100% fine?
Chinese pop culture is also getting popular, and because of the rise of popularity, more people post about it. Problem is… people immediately lose interest the moment they learn that it’s Chinese.
For example, despite WayV being an official unit of NCT, some NCTzens refuse to listen/support WayV because the music isn’t Korean.
Like, I don’t even know what to call it. Fetishization of Koreans or sinophobia? I don’t know, take your pick.
I play this game call Genshin Impact (which I think most people know about), which was made by a Chinese company. The game has characters of Chinese origin (names, food, clothes, buildings, and more are Chinese-styled), and it’s so tiring to repeatedly tell players to stop calling them Japanese.
Literally the one time Chinese culture can finally get some appreciation, and people just gotta trample all over it SMH.
Controversies like Tzuyu’s flag, RM’s speech, and BLACKPINK’s panda scandal garnered a lot of hate against Chinese people. People utilizes these controversies as validations to be sinophobic.
See what I mean?
Chinese netizens are pretty sensitive at about almost everything, but there are times they had the right to be angry, and people just always talk down at them and add unnecessary commentary.
Chinese people are always linked to the CCP and it’s ridiculous.
Things like this is just… ugh. I get it. The CCP is not great, but what do you expect Chinese citizens to do?
A few months ago, there was that Nike and Adidas issue in China, and a lot of Chinese celebs took the CCP’s side, including Jackson. There were people that even blatantly said that Jackson should just move out of China so he won’t have to support the CCP, as if it’s that easy.
I’m just honestly baffled at the narrow way of thinking some people have. I don’t care if you don’t want to support Chinese idols, but who gave you the authority to go ahead and say they should be kicked out?
Anyways, these are just some frustrations I’m venting out as a Chinese-American. It’s really hurtful to hear and see people say negative things about Chinese people when we are humans as well. We have feelings too.
Just like every place, there are good and bad people. Please stop labelling us all as “bat-eaters”, “communists”, “CCP supporters”, etc. because we’re not 🙂
